Following reports of 4,147 smart cards going missing, MPS advises healthcare professionals on how to avoid the possibility of criticism or potential disciplinary action.

Senior Medicolegal Adviser Dr Nick Clements, said:

"In the light of a number of serious high profile losses of data, it is understandable that there is high anxiety about these smart cards going missing. However, using a smart card without the individual designated pin number will not enable anyone to access patients' data.

"In order to avoid any risk of criticism it is very important that staff adhere rigorously to their local organisation's policy, take reasonable precautions and report any lost or stolen cards immediately."

MPS advises the following:

- Any card which has been lost or stolen should be reported immediately.
- All staff should stick rigorously to their local organisation's policy.
- Take all reasonable steps to ensure that your card is kept secure at all times.
